Private driving lessons are ideal for new teen drivers and new drivers 18 years of age and older who want additional training above the minimum state requirements. These driving lessons are also an exceptional way to prepare for the driving skills “road test” that all new drivers are required to pass in order to obtain a Michigan drivers License.

**Legal note** If you are a new driver 18 years of age or older, you are eligible to take Private Driving lessons from a certified instructor and by-pass the Segment One and Segment Two classes.

New drivers (18 and older) who are exempt from the GDL process must first obtain a Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP) from the Michigan Sectary of State before participating in private driving lessons. A TIP will also allow you to practice driving with a licensed adult for a minimum of 30 days and up to 180 days to prepare for your driving test. The driving skills test will be administered by an independent testing organization approved by the Department of State.

To Obtain a Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP) you will be required to:

  • Visit the Secretary of State and pass a vision test
  • Meet health standards set by the Secretary of State’s office
  • Take a written driving knowledge test and pay the appropriate licensing fees.
